A "Weed and Seed" Initiative
Partners
No Longer Bound
No Longer Bound (NLB) provides programs and activities that focus on the youth in the community. It runs an after school-program called Kidís CafÈ, an emergency food program, and a summer camp. It also works closely with the church on community outreach. It has run community events including the Health Fair and the Senior Picnic. In addition, NLB runs a dancing program called Step for Success, and a program for the parents of K-3 kids called Supporting School Success.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
(Big Brothers/Big Sisters (BBBS) runs the BRIDGE program, which matches children of incarcerated parents between the ages of 4 to 15 with a caring adult mentor.
Bloomsdale-Fleetwing Improvement Committee
Bloomsdale-Fleetwing Improvement Committee (BFIC) provides a summer camp for children between the ages of 6 and 14 residing in the Bloomsdale-Fleetwing community. The summer camp provides youths with educational and cultural outlets during the summer through field trips and computer learning.
Entourage
Entourage provides dance classes for children from the Weed and Seed community. They recently hired an assistant director with a degree in dance. His name is Carl Anthony of Trenton, NJ.
Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts stresses team building, getting along, leading a healthy lifestyle, and having a healthy attitude through its camp program and other initiatives. It specifically stresses the need to focus on mother-daughter initiatives and the need for discussing the necessity of a healthy attitude with youth. It provides an after-school program at Truman High School called Yo-Design, and it organized a fashion show. This group also had a field trip to the New York City Fashion District during the 2005-2006 school year.
Planned Parenthood Association of Bucks County
Planned Parenthood Association of Bucks County (PPABC) runs two programs: Boys 2 Men and Girlfriends. The Boys 2 Men program carries out discussions and workshops with boys between the ages of 10 and 15, which target gender stereotypes and myths, thereby clarifying values and attitudes towards sexuality. The program also includes homework, physical activity, home school liaison activities, and field trips.
The Girlfriends program targets girls between the ages of 11 and 15. It includes components of proven sexuality education curricula and covers topics including prevention of STIs/HIV, abstinence and contraception, body image, responsible decision making, alcohol and drug abuse, developing a positive racial identity, and other topics pertaining to sexual health.
Neighborhood First Program, Inc.
Neighborhood First Program, Inc. works with pre-adjudicated and adjudicated youth. This year the program introduced a new chess club, coordinated a basketball league, and successfully ran a teen cycling club. The teen cycling club, a group run by Neighborhood First and volunteers, introduced neighborhood youth to the bike ways of Bucks County, bicycle safety, and responsibility of ownership. All the participants were able to keep their bicycles following the six-week camp.
